On August 20 and 22, 2022, the "Expert Symposium on Resilience Assessment and Improvement Strategies of Urban Integrated Transportation System and Infrastructure" series conference was successfully held under the guidance of China Highway Society and hosted by Tongji University. More than 100 scholars and visitors participated in the conference online.

The meeting focused on "How to comprehensively and accurately evaluate the resilience of urban integrated transportation system and infrastructure?", which was selected by Tongji University as one of the top ten frontier scientific questions of 2022 by the China Association for Science and Technology. Zhu Hehua and Wang Fuming, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were specially invited to the meeting to guide the work. Liu Wenjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary general of the China Society of Highway, Li Hua, Director of the Science and Technology Evaluation Center of the China Society of Highway, and executive Secretary General of the Expert Committee attended the meeting. In this series of meetings, experts shared their research results and views on the construction of resilient cities and resilient transportation from the perspectives of urban development, climate change, extreme environment, etc., and put forward many constructive and forward-looking valuable opinions on the writing of policy recommendations and subsequent research directions, completing the tasks of the meetings far beyond expectations.

Professor Li Hui from Tongji University introduced the background and content of the question

The meeting was presided over by Li Xinghua, dean and professor of China Institute of Transportation Research, Tongji University, and Secretary general of Expert Committee of China Society of Highway. Li Hui, national high-level overseas talents, member of Youth Expert Committee of China Society of Highway, and senior professor of Tongji University, introduced the background of frontier scientific issues of resilient transportation.

Zhu Hehua, Wang Fuming, Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Liu Jiazhen, former Deputy Director General of Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Transport; Wang Xiaojing, former chief engineer of Highway Research Institute of Ministry of Transport; Tan Yiqiu, President of Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai); Zhao Xiangmo, President of Xi 'an Technological University; Tian Bo, Deputy Director of Road Research Center of Highway Research Institute of Ministry of Transport; Prof. Huang Hongwei, Changjiang Scholar, School of Civil Engineering, Tongji University, Director of International Resilient Infrastructure Joint Research Center (ICRI); Prof. Jiang Yinghong, Chairman of Shanghai Urban Construction Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., LTD., Professorial senior engineer, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Highway Society; Yang Chao, director of the Center for Transportation Economics at the China Institute of Transportation Research, Tongji University, and other experts conducted extensive discussions on the theme of the conference.

Liu Wenjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary general of China Society of Highway and Transportation, congratulated and affirmed that the resilient traffic problem proposed by Tongji University was selected as one of the top Ten Frontier Scientific Problems of 2022 by China Association for Science and Technology, and pointed out that future research should further clarify the similarities and differences between the concept of toughness and previous similar concepts, so as to form a unique closed-loop theory of toughness. It is expected that the study of toughness will be paid attention not only in academic field, but also in engineering practice and application.

Academician Zhu Hehua pointed out that although the theory of toughness covers many disciplines, its connotation should not be too broad, and the theory, index and standard should be more focused. He also proposed the idea of talking about toughness from the perspective of "human", extending the complex human toughness to the transportation system, and establishing a unified theoretical system of toughness.

Wang Fuming, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, spoke

Academician Wang Fuming put forward some enlightening suggestions and prospects from the aspects of scientific connotation, discipline integration and science popularization of resilient transportation. It also points out that in future studies, the connotation of transportation infrastructure resilience needs to be further refined, "look at transportation beyond transportation", attach great importance to the intersection of transportation, energy, water conservancy and other industries, and the integration of above-ground transportation and underground pipe network, so as to improve urban resilience overall.

This series of meetings of "Expert Symposium on Resilience Assessment and Improvement Strategies of Urban Integrated Transportation System and Infrastructure" was held online and offline simultaneously, which attracted wide attention of relevant scholars from all over the country, obtained warm responses, and accomplished the tasks of the conference beyond expectations. These experts point the way forward for resilient transport systems and infrastructure research, and contribute to resilient cities in our country.
